Off Galicia in northwest Spain—hardly some “here be dragons” corner of the map—divers and scientists have identified a ribbon worm that can scrunch itself into neat, regular folds like an accordion. They’ve only got six specimens so far. And yes, that’s enough to say it’s not only a new species, but a whole new genus: Pararosa vigarae.

Six worms, one well-known estuary, and a whole lot of humility

All known specimens were found in the Ría de Arousa, a coastal estuary in Galicia. This isn’t the Mariana Trench. It’s a worked-over shoreline—visited by divers, studied by researchers, the kind of place people assume has already given up its secrets.

And yet these worms were pulled from the kind of hiding spots that don’t make it into glossy nature documentaries: under rocks and shells, about 98 feet down.

With only six individuals in hand, scientists can formally describe the animal and compare it to known relatives. What they can’t do—yet—is tell you how common it is, how wide its range runs inside the estuary, or how much it varies from worm to worm. The weird part here isn’t “unknown creature exists in the ocean.” The weird part is “unknown creature exists in a European coastal zone people have been poking at for decades.”

The party trick: it collapses into rings and shrinks to 1/5 its length

When relaxed, Pararosa vigarae is described as brown to dark green, about 4.3 to 9.8 inches long and roughly 0.12 to 0.16 inches wide—basically a living ribbon.

Then you bother it, and it pulls an accordion move: it contracts down to about a quarter—or even a fifth—of its stretched-out length. The biggest specimen showed around 60 ring-like markings along its body. Even after it extends again, those rings don’t fully vanish; they linger as shallow grooves, like the worm’s body keeps the memory of being compressed.

That’s not just a gross-out novelty for social media. Biologists care because ribbon worms can be notoriously hard to tell apart from the outside. A consistent, visible feature—like these ringed folds—can be gold in a group where “looks like a worm” is usually the whole description.

Ribbon worms are quiet predators—with a built-in weapon

This animal belongs to the phylum Nemertea: ribbon worms. They’re mostly marine, soft-bodied, and built for ambush. Their signature tool is an extendable proboscis—a kind of deployable tube they use to grab prey.

Researchers tied to the University of Alcalá have pointed out that in some ribbon worms, that proboscis can deliver venom capable of paralyzing prey. So while the “accordion” gimmick gets the headlines, the broader context is that these are stealth hunters living in tight little benthic hideouts—under rocks, in crevices, around shells—where being flexible and hard to spot is the whole game.

Scientists have described about 1,300 ribbon worm species so far, and plenty of researchers think that number is low. One reason: many nemerteans don’t come with obvious external ID tags. If you’re waiting for bright colors or distinctive fins, you’re going to miss a lot of life.

DNA did the heavy lifting—and pushed it into “new genus” territory

For decades, sorting ribbon worms often meant slow, finicky work: dissections, internal anatomy, and a lot of educated guesswork when two species looked nearly identical on the outside.

This time, genetics settled the argument. Researcher Aida Verdes said the team sequenced the worm’s DNA and ran phylogenetic analyses that confirmed it wasn’t merely a new species—it belonged to a new genus.

The team used a stack of standard genetic markers for this kind of evolutionary family-tree work: 16S rRNA, 18S rRNA, 28S rRNA, COI, and histone H3. Using multiple markers helps avoid the “one gene fooled us” problem and strengthens the case that you’re looking at a genuinely distinct lineage.

A coastal wake-up call: we’re still missing plenty, even near shore

The takeaway isn’t “the ocean is spooky.” It’s that our species inventory is still full of holes, even along heavily studied coasts.

Two blind spots show up again and again. First, the methodological one: small, bottom-dwelling animals that live under rocks and inside crevices get overlooked because they’re easy to miss and annoying to collect. Second, the taxonomic one: if a group doesn’t have clear external features, species can sit in limbo until someone runs careful comparisons—often with DNA.

Right now, Pararosa vigarae is basically a headline attached to six specimens. Scientists still have to figure out the basics: what it eats, how it reproduces, how far it spreads through the estuary, and whether the accordion-folding is a quirky one-off or a visible clue that Europe’s coastal ribbon worms are more diverse than anyone’s been admitting.
